Trump’s July 4th Deadline Faces Capitol Hill Chaos

President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” appears headed for the finish line, but not without some last-minute skirmishes on Capitol Hill. While the White House projects confidence that the legislation’s core will remain untouched, behind the scenes, Republicans in the House and Senate are still tussling over language that could delay final passage.

White House Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett downplayed any significant hurdles during an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital on Wednesday. “They’re arguing over last-minute language,” Hassett said, calling the disagreements little more than “footnotes.” According to him, the substance of the bill—particularly Trump’s most prized policy points—is “hardwired” into the legislation.

That includes making Trump’s initial round of tax cuts permanent, eliminating taxes on overtime, tips, and Social Security, and advancing key border security measures and infrastructure projects like the so-called “Golden Dome.”

However, that optimism isn’t shared universally on the Hill. Conservative firebrand Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) made waves when he publicly cast doubt on the Senate’s changes to the bill, stating flatly that if what he’s heard is true, “I would not vote for it as it is.” With razor-thin Republican majorities in both chambers, even a small rebellion could derail the timeline.

The first version of the bill passed the House by a single vote, meaning any return trip from the Senate with changes will face intense scrutiny. Senate Republicans, meanwhile, are reportedly considering sweeteners such as expanded Medicaid provisions to win over holdouts and unify the caucus before the bill heads back to the House for final approval.

Still, Hassett insists none of the tweaks should be seen as altering Trump’s vision. “What they’re arguing about now is stuff around the edges,” he said.

President Trump, for his part, is keeping the pressure on. He’s made it clear he expects the bill on his desk by July 4th and has demanded Congress stay in session until it’s done. “No one goes on vacation until the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ is done,” he posted on Truth Social. “It will be a Historic Present for THE GREAT PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, as we begin the Celebration of our Country’s 250th Birthday.”

The legislation represents a centerpiece of Trump’s second-term agenda. With time ticking down and a vote likely this Friday in the Senate, the question now is whether lawmakers can overcome their final disagreements and deliver the win Trump is demanding.

The stakes aren’t just political—they’re symbolic. Trump wants this bill signed and celebrated as a defining legislative moment that aligns with America’s semiquincentennial. If Congress can make that deadline, it will mark a rare show of unity for a party often divided by its own ambitions. But if the bickering drags out, the delay could tarnish what the administration hopes to frame as a triumph of vision, discipline, and follow-through.
